Bio:
A change in my career in 82, I started working as an Auto Painter. At About the same time I started doing Home Improvement in the evenings and weekend to supplement my income. I worked my way up to head painter at a local shop. In 1988 the job ended with a change in management and I found myself in need of a work.
I took a job repairing bathtubs and with my background, I started as their Residential Technician. After a year working for them, I started Porcelain Refinishers, doing bathtub & tile refinishing and home Improvements for another 7 years. During that period I received my Contractors Home Improvement license and in 1995 incorporated as Porcelain Refinishers Inc. DBA Porcelain Tub Restorations, began training to expand the company.
Today I am very proud of what I and Jennifer (My better half :) have built. The challenges of running a successful business has been very gratifying to me. I look forward to the new technologies that are happening with the advent of UV Coatings and just how green we can go to reduce our waste and using environmentally friendly techniques.
Our Training and Quality Control Program
I prefer to work with new hires that show the proper attitude, right ethics, mechanical, artistic background and train them to our work habits and quality. Once they are comfortable and doing consistent work they start in our commercial division and only the ones who show consistent high quality and pride are kept. With experience, they can move into our residential department.
Our new hires spend two weeks in our Training Stations, learning how to mask, protect, repair and Reglaze a Bathroom. Over and Over again, as they become comfortable with the equipment, material and techniques of Reglazing. The second week is for advanced repairs. Such as using fiberglass for rust out repairs, plumbing repair and cracked fiberglass repair.
During the first week, they generally get 10 tubs reglazed.

Practice makes for Perfect.
Here we are towards the end of the first week. Starting to look, pretty good.

Two training stations, both are in use today.
It was fun to watch as I told them; I would only keep the best one. Boy did that motivate them.
They both had such a great attitude and improved skills by the end of the week, I kept them both.
Getting some feed back from LJ on the last spray job. Every reglaze is critique, for consistency and proper application and quality. Each day we saw improvement.
WOW! Final Exam day. Good work guys A+

Now…. tape it up for chemical stripping and
DO IT AGAIN!

No Graduation until we get four perfect jobs in a row.
Completing the initial training is only their license to learn. Next phase is a month with an experienced Reglazer, supervising them while they do real jobs in our commercial division. Here they start to get a handle on setting up a job for a successful outcome.
There are many idiosyncrasies in Bathtub and Tile Reglazing. That must be observed and learned. With repetition and understanding, come productivity, efficiency and quality.
Once the field supervisor cuts them loose, they are observed daily by Quality Control until the new technician and us, are all comfortable they can handle what’s thrown at them.
Any new problems they encounter can now be addressed by phone or a quick trip to their location for assistance. By the end of one year with us they will have between 500 & 600 hundred reglazing jobs under their belts.
Well on their way to becoming Professional Refinishers, generally it is a least a couple of years before they will ever see a Residential Job. Unless they come to us with real world, experience and can demonstrate that skill to us.
Therefore, the question of will you get a professional Refinisher when you call Porcelain Tub Restorations is most definitely a Yes! They will have had thousands of Bathtub refinishes in their resumes.
All of my technician’s are professionals, fully trained, have background checks and paid professional wages. After all, it is as if we are spraying a small car in your home. The skill to spray a beautiful, smooth coating, no dry areas or runs, free of debris and without surface defects while not damaging your home is after all a skill and without pride, work will never come.
You do not want an amateur or a corner cutting company doing your job, using cheap help and using low quality materials, that is the only way to charge less.
In all my years of training and hiring, I have only hired a couple of refinishers from another company. All the others could not deliver anywhere near a decent job, showed poor work quality, poor chemical handling habits and poorly maintained equipment.
The last Residential Reglazer I interviewed from another company (franchise) was paid $12.00 per hour. Hardly professional wages and the quality of his demo reflected it, and no, I did not hire him.
